The 24 hour circadian rhythms are generated by the molecular circadian clock which is present in nearly every cell in the mammalian body. Nearly all organisms from unicellular eukaryotes to mammals demonstrate circadian rhythms and have circadian clocks. The term circadian is derived from Latin circa (meaning about) and diem (meaning day) and indeed circadian rhythms are approximately 24 hours in duration.
